Bhai Dooj or Bhai Tika is a well renowned festival celebrated by Hindus in the month of Kartik. This festival is one of that signifies the special connection between a brother and a sister. On this festival, sisters worship lord Yamaraj (the God of death) and pray for a long and prosperous life for their brothers.

Significance of Bhai Dooj

Bhaiya dooj defines the eternal love and belonging between brother and sister. This wonderful festival is a significant occasion which is celebrated in different parts of India with the several names.

In Nepal, it is also known as Bhaitihar (means the festival of brothers); and in Southern parts of India, the day is celebrated as Yama Dwitiya. In the Kayashta community, this festival is celebrated twice. One comes on the second day after Diwali while the other is celebrated a day after Holi

History behind Bhai Dooj Celebration

There is a Hindu mythological story related to the origin of this auspicious day. According to the legend, Lord Krishna visited his sister, Subhadra, after killing demon Narakasur. Subhadra gave him a warm welcome and made the occasion really special with flowers and sweets. She also applied the ceremonial Tilak on the forehead of Krishna and started this festival.

How to Celebrate Bhai Dooj 2021

On this festival sisters invite their lovely brothers to visit their homes and prepare delicious food for them. Bhai Dooj is an important occasion which is celebrated across India with great enthusiasm and spirit.

On this day, sisters also keep fast and apply Tilak (vermilion) on the foreheads of their brothers. Carrying the ceremony in traditional style, sisters perform Aarti for their brothers and also pray to God for the well being and long lives of their brothers. In return, brothers promise their sisters to fulfill their responsibilities.

In order to celebrate the occasion in a traditional style, sisters make a seat for their brothers by the flour of rice in order to complete the ceremony, a paste of vermilion, dahi and rice is applied as a religious Tika on the forehead of the brothers.

After this, the sisters offer flowers of pumpkin, betel leaves, betel nuts, and coins in the palms of their brothers and slowly chant the mantras by pouring water on the palm. After this, sisters have to tie a Kalawa onto the hand. A lamp (Diya) facing the south direction is lit and it is considered a good Omen to see a flying kite in the sky in order to get your wishes fulfilled. There is also a exchange of gifts among brother and sister on the Bhai Dooj.

Bhai Dooj 2021 Muhurat

Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the second day of the dark lunar fortnight. The festival is celebrated on the very last day of the five days Long Diwali festival.
